Peter Gabriel decisively influenced the development of WOMAD. The former frontman of the worldwide successful band Genesis can look back on a highly individual solo career that has lasted for thirty years. Throughout his career he laid an emphasis on the production and promotion of world music. He founded the Real World Studios, to integrate unknown artists from different cultures into the occidental world. Musicians such as Yungchen Lhamo, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Youssou N®Dour became popular through the project.

Peter Gabriel has taken notice of the Silk Road Project 2010 through Gesuino Deiana. The famous star of world music commented on the project that "it sounds like a really interesting project, you are working on."
